Moxibustion is an Eastern heat therapy that uses mugwort’s gentle aroma and warmth to harmonize the body’s inner flow.

What is Moxa Treatment?

“Moxa” is prepared from the Artemisia plant—known in Japanese as yomogi and in English as wormwood or mugwort. Thriving across the Eurasian continent and revered as the “Queen of Herbs,” it has long been used in Europe for herbal remedies and liqueurs, while in Japan it flavors traditional rice cakes (yomogi-mochi).
Acupuncturists carefully gather only the delicate downy hairs from the underside of these leaves, crafting them into a golden “moxa floss,” which is then placed on specific points of the body and gently burned.

How does it feel?

“Feels like Wasabi!” — a brief, zesty tingle, much like the instant kick of wasabi. The heat fades almost immediately, leaving no burns or marks. With the Koshiishi method, the warmth penetrates deeply into the acupoint while keeping the surface skin completely safe.

Moxibustion Style — Koshiishi Method + Skin Balm

At our clinic we follow the Koshiishi approach in three simple steps:

  1. Protect & hydrate.
A thin layer of a beeswax-infused botanical skin balm is gently applied to the chosen acupoint.
  2. Place & warm.
A single grain-sized cone of golden moxa is set on the point and lit. When a pleasantly warm sensation spreads through the area, the ember is calmly extinguished.
  3. Repeat as needed.
The procedure is performed several times if required, allowing a deep, soothing heat to reach the tissues—comfortable, effective, and never hot enough to cause burns.

Benefits of Moxibustion

  • Improved Circulation & Relief from Coldness
Gentle, penetrating warmth dilates capillaries, easing cold hands and feet and loosening stiff shoulders.
  • Pain Alleviation
The combination of heat and subtle moxa stimulation encourages the release of endogenous opioids, reducing chronic pain and muscle tension.
  • Immune & Autonomic Balance
Mild thermal “stress” on the skin activates white blood cells and helps stabilize the body’s stress response.
  • Digestive & Women’s Health Support
Traditionally used to stimulate digestion and address menstrual pain, irregular cycles, and menopausal discomfort.
  • Relaxation & Stress Reduction
The soothing warmth and earthy aroma promote parasympathetic activity, inviting deep calm and relaxation.
